I think we need to ask ourselves who “thrives” on social media and what does “thrive” look like. For most it’s getting “likes” and growing a greater following.

Instead of seeing their worth reflected in more money or stuff they see it reflected in more social media influence. To stand out and grow this influence in an overcrowded market one needs to act like a drama queen. It really doesn’t matter what you said it is how can it be spun to make drama.

I believe that it was Marx who said that “religion is the opium of the masses”. Today I think it’s social media. Our tech elite make money off of our data while we mindlessly run around acting like little mindless trolls in their goldmines and we don’t stop to think about what we are doing to each other and society.

I doubt any of these social media trolls have ever stopped to self reflect and certainly don’t have the intellectual abilities to debate anything beyond the latest celebrity news or conspiracy theory.
