Clearly I did not express my thoughts clearly enough. First, I think generational trauma exists, it is just the the person suffering the "first trauma" suffers something different and more immediate. It is after all a first person experience rather than something carried down the generations. However,
I was trying to point out the danger of a "learned helplessness". If you feel that there is no hope of changing something you will probably do nothing at all.
Imagine if you will a child who is a bully and you say to that child "no matter what you do you cannot ever ever ever fix the damage you have done. Not one single thing will undo, in the slightest way, the harm you have done. "
Would that child have any desire to try to fix things. Unlikely. My point is, over time, we need to figure out a way forward a way to heal. It may take a long time but if we cannot heal any of the damage done why even try.
